Water Heater Making Noise? What Popping, Rumbling and Screeching Mean

Published 2026-01-08 · Updated 2026-09-01 · Best Plumbers Louisiana

A water heater is supposed to be almost silent. When it is not, the sound is diagnostic — each noise comes from a different failure.

Popping and rumbling

This is the most common one we hear about, and it is sediment.

Minerals settle to the bottom of the tank. On a gas heater, the burner is below that layer, so water trapped underneath superheats and forces its way up through the sediment as steam. That is the popping.

It is not dangerous in itself. It does mean the heater is working harder than it should, running less efficiently, and heading for a shorter life.

Fix: a tank flush. If sediment has hardened into a crust, flushing may not fully clear it, and the tank is on borrowed time.

Screeching or high-pitched whistling

Water being forced through a restricted opening. Usually a valve that is only partly open — the cold inlet, the outlet, or a fixture valve. Occasionally the temperature and pressure relief valve.

Check: are all valves fully open? If the noise is coming from the T&P valve itself, stop and call. That valve is a safety device and it should not be whistling.

Ticking or tapping

Usually harmless. Pipes expanding and contracting as hot water moves through them, tapping against framing or a strap. Heat traps in the nipples on top of the tank also tick.

Annoying, not urgent.

Banging or hammering when a tap shuts

This is water hammer, and it is not really the heater. Fast-closing valves — washing machines and dishwashers especially — stop moving water abruptly and the shock travels through the pipes. Over years it loosens joints and fittings.

The fix is arrestors installed at the offending appliance.

Sizzling or hissing

If it is coming from the base of a gas heater, water may be dripping onto the burner. That means a leak — from a fitting, or from the tank itself.

Water pooling under the tank is the one sound-and-sight combination that means stop reading and call. A tank that has rusted through cannot be repaired.

What you can do about sediment yourself

Flushing a tank is genuinely a homeowner job on a unit that has been maintained. On a ten-year-old tank that has never been flushed, opening the drain valve often means it will not close again — and now you have an emergency instead of a chore.

If your heater has never been flushed and is over five years old, have it done as part of a service visit rather than on a Sunday afternoon.

Louisiana water and heater life

Hardness here means sediment builds faster than manufacturer schedules assume. Households on hard water often see tanks fail years early. A softener pays for itself in appliance life if the hardness numbers justify it — we test before recommending one.
