Brown Water From the Faucet: When It's the City and When It's Your Pipes

Discolored water is alarming and usually harmless — but the pattern tells you whether it is a passing nuisance or a system that needs replacing.

Run this test first

Turn on a cold tap and let it run three to five minutes. Then check three things.

Does it clear? If yes, sediment was disturbed somewhere upstream. Usually a city main flush, hydrant use, or a main break nearby. Nothing for you to fix.

Is it only hot water? That is your water heater, not the supply. Rust from inside the tank, or a sacrificial anode rod that has been fully consumed. See below.

Is it every tap, all the time? That is your own piping corroding, and it is the one that needs a plan.

Brown hot water only

The anode rod inside a water heater is a length of magnesium or aluminum that corrodes deliberately so the steel tank does not. Once it is consumed, the tank starts rusting instead.

Replacing an anode rod on a heater that is otherwise healthy is a genuinely worthwhile repair and extends tank life significantly. Replacing it on a tank that is already rusting through is too late.

We check the rod as part of water heater service and tell you which of those two you are in.

Brown water at every tap, every time

If it never clears and it affects hot and cold equally, the pipes themselves are the source. In older Louisiana housing this usually means galvanized steel supply lines, which corrode internally over decades.

The symptoms cluster: rusty water, declining pressure, and pinhole leaks starting to appear. Once two of those three are present, patching individual sections stops making financial sense, and a whole-house repipe is the answer.

Yellow rather than brown

Yellow or tea-colored water is often manganese rather than iron. It stains laundry and fixtures. It is common in some parish water supplies and is generally addressed with filtration rather than plumbing repair.

Is it safe to drink?

Iron-discolored water is generally not a health hazard, but we do not recommend drinking or cooking with it while it is discolored, and definitely do not do laundry — it sets stains. Your water utility publishes an annual quality report and will tell you if they are flushing mains in your area.

If discoloration arrives suddenly along with a drop in pressure, call the utility first. That combination suggests a main break.
